It's no secret that I adore wearable fitness trackers; at the moment, I have three on: an Oura Ring, a Whoop, and an Apple Watch. Even while I rely on my Apple Watch to keep track of my exercises and the time, and I find my Whoop numbers fascinating, the Oura Ring stands out—and in more ways than one.

It's a sensible ring, to start. Not just any boring jewelry, but a hefty, glittering gold ring with flat edges that appears noticeably fashionable. Putting aside appearances, the Oura Ring has some very amazing abilities. The Oura Ring doesn't require any additional input (apart from the initial set-up), unlike most fitness and sleep trackers. You simply wear it, and it tracks your numbers (sleep, activity,  body temperature, and period prediction), and you can view them easily within the app. And it’s those very stats that motivate me to open the app more than ever before. After all, within its easy-to-read interface lies the answers to all my energy woes—and that’s why, unlike my Apple Watch (which I rely on for time and activity tracking) and Whoop (which I adore for its journal prompting and activity motivation), I wear my Oura Ring basically 24/7—and have been for eight months straight.

Overview of the Oura Ring Generation 3 tracker, the Ring Sleep Tracker

  1. Size and Fit: Eight sizes are available (you can request a sizing kit for accurate fit)
  2. Life of battery: four to seven days
  3. Features: Tracks sleep, daytime heart rate, exercise heart rate, and blood oxygen levels (among other things)

Pros:

Your resting heart rate, amount of time spent in bed, and overall sleep quality are all measured.

In order to comprehend sleep efficiency, readiness, and activity better, it provides standard scores.

Your period can be predicted by it.

It is compatible with Google Fit and Apple Health.

Possibly the most fashionable sleep tracker available is this one.

Cons:

Despite being fashionable (and lightweight), it is somewhat hefty in comparison to delicate rings.

Even though the REM sleep tracker examines sleep patterns in great detail, it isn't always the most precise.

Pricey, but not significantly more expensive than the typical fitness or sleep tracker (unless you choose the Gucci x Oura collaboration, in which case, cha-ching!)After the initial six-month free trial, a membership ($5.99/month) is required in order to use your ring. It is not scratch-resistant.Not all finger sizes are supported

Capabilities

At its essence, the Oura Ring Generation 3 is a sleep monitor. In order to assess your general level of preparation for the day, it considers your sleep, activity, body temperature, heart rate, and heart rate variability (HRV). The Oura app assigns a score between 0 and 100 for each of the three major categories (Sleep, Activity, and Readiness), with 85 or higher being optimal (meaning you're ready for action), 70 to 84 being good (meaning you're decently recovered), and below 70 earning a message to pay attention (which means you need to be aware of your level of alertness to avoid making mistakes or injuring yourself). Even when you're sleeping, Oura can tell and then multiply your Sleep and Readiness scores by those points. These ratings might initially seem arbitrary, but with regular use, they quickly become into guiding principles. This is mainly due to the fact that when you achieve an optimal score, you are awarded a crown, and if you achieve optimal scores in all three categories, you are awarded a triple crown, which is displayed as three opaque blue dots on your calendar's monthly view (where period prediction also exists, appropriately, as red circles within a three-day window; see below for more information). Of course, the Oura Ring might not be all that interesting if you're not into keeping track of things and don't feel accomplished by getting such information. However, for me, it makes a huge difference in how I feel.

Continue wearing it and receiving information from it. Let's talk about period prediction as promised. The Oura Ring Generation 3 monitors your body's temperature and records changes by highlighting deviations from your baseline or usual temperature. It is said to be able to predict when your next cycle will be based on plus and minus readings. However, it also asks you on the app if your period has started yet, which it then considers while building your personal period prediction file. With that in mind, it's difficult to determine whether it is actually (and exclusively) based on temperature data or if it heavily relies on your most recent period. The ability to view your anticipated date on a calendar, however, can be useful if you're preparing for a trip or are just so busy that you forget when you're due. It's important to note that many activists advise against using period tracking apps, and you can choose not to utilize period prediction within the Oura Ring app given the awful state of affairs regarding women's reproductive rights in the United States. The Oura Ring has additional features, such as guided meditations, breathing exercises, sleep noises, and more, in addition to Sleep, Activity, and Readiness. It tracks your ring's movement up and down, side to side, and back and forth using a 3D accelerator. It really does everything.

The App

Because the Oura Ring lacks a screen, using it effectively requires the companion software. Having said that, it's simple to use in terms of apps. The five major divisions are: Home, Readiness, Sleep, Activity, and Explore. Users can check their readiness score, sleep score, activity goal progress, heart rate, finished activities for the day, and bedtime from the night before on the Home screen. Then, users can go through a more detailed overview of each category in the Readiness, Sleep, and Activity sections. The primary factors of Readiness are highlighted on the page, including resting heart rate, HRV, body temperature, and breathing rate. The software examines factors like total sleep time, productivity, restfulness, and REM sleep for sleep.timeliness, timing, and latency (also known as how quickly you fall asleep) (how consistent your sleep is with your average bedtime and wake times). Then, under Activity, it essentially keeps track of your level of activity (or lack thereof), your training load, and your recovery period. Overall, it offers you a lot to think about and makes it clear where you need to improve.

Fit and Size

Eight sizes (6–13) of the Oura Ring Gen 3 are available; it is made to snugly fit your finger. Three sensor-filled bumps are lined inside the ring, but they don't protrude in a way that reduces the comfort of the ring. The Oura Ring Generation 3's larger design, although being quite light—almost imperceptibly so—reminds me of the nostalgic and massive BONBON WHIMS rings that are popular on Ticktock. I prefer to wear the Oura Ring on my forefinger because the middle finger feels a little awkward due to the silhouette. (That's okay though; for the most accurate readings, the brand suggests

wearing it on one of those two fingers.)

There are four hues available for the Oura Ring Generation 3: gold, silver, black, and stealth (a type of slate chrome). I adore my gold Oura Ring, which I now own.

Durability

It's reasonable to say that my Oura Ring is sturdy because I wear it all day, every day, while I write, cook, exercise, and do other things. It is not, however, scratch-proof. The Oura Ring tracks sleep in its primary function, but it also monitors activity. I like to wear it to Orange theory exercise classes and use it as a fitness tracker. It has acquired numerous minor scratches as a result of grasping rough dumbbells during this process. The ring can combine with Apple Health to record essential data if you don't want to take a chance on wear and tear Now that the ring has a workout heart rate monitor, I personally like to wear it all the time. The Oura Ring Generation 3 is water-resistant up to 100 metres, so you may shower in it, sweat in it, and swim in it. I only take it off to shower, but not out of necessity.

Battery's life

The battery can indeed last for between four and seven days, as Oura claims. A full charge, which takes less than an hour, still lasts me almost a full week even after I've worn it for about a year. This is a significant improvement over my Apple Watch. Before frequent use, the battery would last a few days, but now it needs to be recharged every night.

Conclusion

What if a top-notch sleep monitor was covered up by a thin, stylish ring? Since the moment I put the Oura Ring Generation 3 on my finger, I've been a fan. It may be a bit bulky, and it frequently informs me that I'm getting little to no REM sleep, which my WHOOP and a study by the research institute SRI International contest (and which shows that Oura's sleep stage readings are only 60% accurate; for that reason, I consider that tracking metric a potential con), but overall, it's very motivating. I'm thankful for being able to observe firsthand how my body responds to different amounts of stress, sleep, and movement because it makes it simpler to determine when to push myself and when to ease off. Any new features will be welcomed by me, and future notifications that will be distributed.

The Oura Ring Generation 3 is a lightweight, stylish ring that doubles as a sleep tracker. It not only analyses sleep but also looks at exercise, forecasts menstrual cycles, and gives suggestions for daily stress relief.
